Mary died exactly 35 years ago today. It’s sobering to think that she’s actually now been dead longer than she was alive. 19th August 1979 seems a lifetime ago. Earlier today I visited Mary’s grave in South Holmwood, Surrey, with her old friend Nick. The churchyard was calm and still; just the blue smoke from the caretaker’s bonfire drifting slowly between the granite headstones. It was a stunningly beautiful day. The whole churchyard was bathed in bright, twinkling mid-afternoon sunshine.
We laid flowers and I read the following words aloud, written by American actress and activist Cookie Mueller, who herself died tragically young:
“Fortunately, I am not the first person to tell you that you will never die. You simply lose your body. You will be the same, except you won’t have to worry about rent or mortgages or fashionable clothes. You will be released from sexual obsessions. You will not have drug addictions. You will be free…”
Rest In Peace, Mary.
